I watched the pilot episode last night of the remake of the old ’80s scifi series V. Was the remake any good? Well, it was ok. High tempo plot and well constructed characters and well-woven scenes. The remake’s got its credentials right – using an actress from Lost, two actors from cult scifi series Firefly and a scene stolen straight from Independence Day in the first 5 mins (though the characters acknowledge the theft with direct reference to that film). I’ll definitely watch the next few episodes (given that the new Dr Who is soooo bad, the new Prisoner TV series is iffy and there really isn’t much else around at the mo).
BUT! All that said, the remake doesn’t have the same impact on the viewer as the ’80s series did when it launched. The remake isn’t culturally that interesting yet. There’s a bit of the McCarthy era paranoia about it cos we can’t trust anyone and don’t know if they’re an alien or not, but that’s lifted straight from the modern series of Battlestar, and BSG does it better. Then we get a fairly heavy-handed comparison to ‘the aliens are like terrorists’ – hmmm. I’m hoping for more political sophistication in the next episode. About all that saves it is the ‘religious’ question and quite an interesting ‘priest’ character.
I suppose there’s only so much they can fit into a pilot. So far, 8.5/10. Definitely worth a look.
