At last, a decent episode in the series! A well-paced plot (not too fast), with good character moments and consistent performances by all. The boyfriend of Amy Pond (Karen Gillian) really provides an interesting foil for the Dr. He is an alternative concept of manhood – very ‘new man’ who’s a bit immature – with strengths and weaknesses like the rest of us. But hold on! The Dr showed some weaknesses too. First, he failed to rescue Amy and she got bitten by the vampires-cum-fish-monster-aliens-from-Saturnia. Then, he got electrocuted and passed out.
I met the UK’s leading podcaster on Dr Who today. He reckons the Dr is deliberately flawed to show there’s something ‘wrong’ with the universe. He reckoned that Matt Smith wasn’t just ‘hamming it up badly’ in early episodes – rather, he was playing out a ‘disturbed’ role.
Hmm. I’m not sure about that. But I am sure this was by far the best episode of the series. I just hope the BBC hasn’t lost too many watchers before finally delivering the goods. Keep it up, BBC!
