Well, watched the dvd of Outlander last night (beats X Factor). It’s about a guy from another world whose space ship crash lands in Norway during the Iron Age. He soon teams up with the local vikings to hunt down this dragon/alien he’s unwittingly brought to Earth in his ship.
Yes, it’s all a bit of a stretch – the plot is absoute hokum and veers between scifi, horror and romance – never quite devoting enough time to any genre to be convincing or compelling. It’s a shame, cos they clearly had a big budget for this film – decent cgi, decent location and some fairly big name actors: Jim Caviezel (you know, the bloke who plays the Prisoner in the recent remake of the tv series), Ron Perlman (Name of the Rose, Mutant X, etc) and John Hurt. I also recognised the female lead as the blonde vampire from Underworld and Blade the series (although in Outlander she’s dyed her hair a ridiculous shade of red).
The vikings are all a little too clean cut. There’s a lot of hammy acting. There’s no moral dilemma in the film. There’s no psychological sophistication. It’s a definite b-movie, albeit a fairly glossy one. A missed opportunity really. They should have asked me or my mate Matt to help with the script. 5/10
