There was nothing on tv the other night so, desperate not to be tempted by the mind-mush of X Factor, I pulled out an old video: Galaxy Quest (1999). Blimey, it’s still the best scifi comedy made to date. If you haven’t seen it, what planet have you been on?
It’s about the cast of a defunct tv scifi show from the 70s (much like the original Star Trek), who haven’t had acting work since then and make a pathetic living on the convention circuit. Tim Allen plays the egomaniac commander, Alan Ritman plays the Mr Spock equivalent (constantly complaining that he was once a great actor who had played Richard III – with five curtain calls) and Sigourney Weaver is brilliant as the blonde and busty female member of the crew whose sole function is to repeat what the ship’s computer has just said.
What sets this scifi spoof apart from the others is the strong characterisation which makes us love and hate the protagonists at the same time – the same sort of feeling as in the Wrestler is created. It’s a date-proof 9/10 from me.
