Well, time for a review of Zombieland, the movie starring Woody Harrelson as a zombie-killing artist and featuring a cameo from Bill Murray. Been waiting with anticipation for this film on dvd cos the cinema release got some pretty good reviews.
But in the end I had mixed feelings about the film. It’s well crafted and put together. Good effects and characterisation, etc. Some great humorous moments… but the plot ends up as nothing more than a road movie (a quest for the last remaining Twinky bar) or ‘boy meets girl’ romance. It’s a shame – if the script had just done that little bit more soul searching, we could have ended up with one of the all time greats.
Don’t get me wrong – it’s a competent little film – but it’s just a bit juvenile and gratuitous at the end of the day – and not in an ironic way either. It does not comment upon the tragedy of the mortal condition, it does not serve as a quest for meaning and it does not seek to celebrate what makes us human or civilized. Shame. Hollywood refuses to take any risks yet again. A disappointed 7/10 from me.
It’s a sad state of affairs really. I’m beginning to think my mate Matt and I are just going to have to write our own zombie film if we want things done properly.
