So, did a signing in Wilmslow on Saturday and boy was it hard work! The customers were all very nice and chatty – and turned out to be the saving grace of the whole thing. But then there were the staff:
– they sat me towards the back of the store and hadn’t thought to put anything in the window even mentioning the signing – they wouldn’t let me move to the front and seemed surprised I wanted a chair for the signing!
– they didn’t buy me a coffee all day (even though it improves author performance)
– I turned up to discover that stock of my second and third books hadn’t even arrived! (They hadn’t thought to phone me to tell me so I could bring some of my own copies instead.)
Muppets. Despite the staff doing everything they could to stop me actually selling any books for them, I still managed to shift well over 20 copies. It’s a shame, cos the customers were generally up for it and I could have sold a lot more if I’d had the stock. Think I’ll add the store to my blacklist (along with Waterstone’s Richmond.)
