Anthony Hopkins plays Odin without being too hammy, Natalie Portman is a goofy scientist, Loki is suitably dastardly, the special FX are hammering, Thor is played well enough, the ‘feel’ of the comic is well captured, Keneth Branagh directs with a certain panache and slings in some old-fashioned slapstick humour, Stan Lee makes a cameo that is for once worthwhile: in short, all the essential ingredients are there… and yet… and yet the souffle never quite rises.
So what went wrong? I think, at heart, this movie lacks a moral dilemma (so the script is a bit lacking really). Thor never really suffers an internal turmoil that is either believable or lasts for more than a second. It’s all pretty entertaining and a majority will enjoy it, but (speaking as someone who still reads Thor) I don’t think it quite measures up. 7/10
