The Derby Carnival parade went right past the windows of Waterstones Derby. Roaring African dragons and huge Afrobeats shook every window in the building and made it impossible even to scream my usual patter. Still, I eventually sold a respectable number of books, despite the store being all but empty because of the sunny weather (and the slightly distracting parade – hey, the naked men cavorting about had better pecs than me, I’ll give them that). Met some nice folk too: Kate, Dan… and then it was just too noisy to hear anyone else’s name. Next stop: Waterstones Wigan on 4 Aug. I bet there’s some wellie-throwing festival scheduled or sumfink.
