Potentially worrying development. Penguin USA is suing authors and demanding the return of book adavances for non-delivery of manuscripts. On the face of it, this might seem all very reasonable on Penguin’s part – a contract has been entered into, blah, blah. However, there is a suggestion in the article that the manuscripts were delivered but they were not deemed ‘acceptable’ by the publisher. I’ve experienced something similar. I handed my publisher Gateway of the Saviours, but it was several long months (during which I had bills to pay) before the publisher decided that it would ‘accept’ the manuscript and would therefore release a payment to me. Penguin USA should be careful, cos there might well be a backlash to this in the longer-term – authors will become far more difficult/wary when it comes to negotiating future contracts.
