Been meaning to watch this movie for years, and wow it doesn’t disappoint. Based on the 1964 novel Simulacron-3 by Daniel F. Galouye, it tells the story of scientists building a virtual world that they can only enter by ‘downloading’ themselves into virtual hosts. The host us effectively ‘possessed’ and has no memory of what happened when they were occupied by their user. When not possessed, they have ‘normal’ lives in the virtual reality, not even realising their reality is virtual. But memories begin to leak from a user to their host. One host then creates a virtual world they can enter by downloading themselves into a virtual host. And so multiple parallel worlds are born. One scientist gets murdered and it’s then a mess trying to work out who did it, and whether they were possessed by a user or not. An interworld romance is thrown in for good measure and the whole thing’s a load of fun. And a thoughtful world of fun too. Highly recommended. (You can see where the idea for Star Trek’s holodeck was nicked from.) An absolute must-see for scifi fans.
