Saw the Matt Damon scifi flick Elysium last night. Apparently, it’s got links to the District 9 people – from the use of pigs, to the great South African baddie (Kruger), who is played by the lead actor in District 9, I think. But it was the District 9 content that was the best of the film – the rest (as provided by Hollywood) was trite tripe. There was a real problem with FALSE SYMBOLISM too. What does that mean? Well, Matt Damon (as a child) is given a locket by a nun – the locket contains a picture of the Earth – he is advised never to forget where he comes from. So, he then goes up to the space-station and opens it to all-comers, so the poor and sick of Earth can escape to this place. The film closes with him getting the locket out and hearing the wise words of the nun once more. Seems like perfect closure, right? Wrong. The locket fills a function required by the classic shape/arc of Hollywood films, but when you look closely at it, it’s completely meaningless and illogical. And that’s the thing with this film – it’s all surface pap – when there is a gesture towards depth and social commentary, it is merely that – a token gesture! Hollywood does NOT care about the sick and poor. It does NOT care about socially disadvantaged Latinos. Jodie Foster is NOT dead. She earned a tonne from this movie. She IS Hollywood royalty and DOES live in the exclusive heaven of Elysium.
So, the film is one of utter utter hypocrisy. The only version of this film that would work would be a SNUFF version. For my money, Tron-Legacy is a million times better if you’re looking for a thought-provoking film.
