So, I’m a big Battlestar Galactica fan (both original and new series). The follow-up to BSG was a series called Caprica, but it got canned after one season. I picked up the pilot episode yesterday to have a watch and see what went wrong.
Within the first 10mins, it was clear what was wrong, because everything was so… unclear. Nothing was making sense and the dialogue was inaudible quite frequently. I really had to persevere to get through the next 10mins, and so on. It’s a real shame, because the plot slowly came together, then there were some great scifi ideas about downloading personalities to cyborg bodies, and then there was a decent ending with one really mean and scary cylon.
I can see how certain audiences (those without dedication or concentration) would lose interest very quickly. And once you miss the first episode of something, well, it’s even harder to pick things up, isn’t it? I can see why Caprica just never built its audience. The makers simply fumbled the first 10 mins. They thought sticking in some young naked breasts might keep those without good concentration watching, but we’ve all seen so many naked breasts these days that they’re boring (porn sites have desensitized the western world, init).
Again, it’s such a shame. Some of the central ideas and characters were great. And there was some proper moral dilemma stuff. So a lesson to us all: you’ve gotta nail those first 10mins. Score of just 6 out of 10. Doesn’t/didn’t cut it.
