Watched some of the Penny Dreadful series over xmas, the show named after the lurid pulp fiction of the Victorian era. It really is very good indeed. The basic premise is that the daughter of a well-to-do Victorian gentleman (played admirably well by Timothy Dalton) is stolen away to the demi-monde (the half world between this world and the next) and he must assemble a team to rescue her. He gathers to him a medium (the gravelly-voiced Eva Green), a Western gunslinger (Josh Hartnett), a doctor (Frankenstein!) and a mysterious man-servant.
There are monsters and myth aplenty in this very gothic and graphic series. There’s a decent story arc, as well as the storylines of each character. It cleverly mixes history and popular fiction to make us question what is real. The special effects and the acting are superb. It makes you yearn to be there with the rest of the cast. And the second series is all but finished too, so it’s not gonna get cut too prematurely. Hurrah! Any niggles? Only that Billie Piper’s faux Irish accent is so bad it’s unintelligible. But it doesn’t prevent this series being one of the freshest and most intriguing of 2014. 8.5 out of 10 from me!
