Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, absolutely knocks spots off Transcendence in terms of its treatment of themes relating to artificial intelligence. It’s set in the utterly believable near future, a future in which our lives are both more integrated and simultaneously isolating than ever before. Albeit that the movie’s themes are enormous, they’re all considered from the perspective of one lonely man. Everything thereby takes on philosophical symbolism and resonance… and we end up tripping and reflecting while watching what would count for the mundane in our own lives. An awesome piece of film-making. If you do nothing else this month, just see this film. It scores 9.5 out of 10 from me. Put that in your philosophical pipe and smoke it.
